Use PTAL in ChatGPT and Claude

PTAL is available as a hosted connector for chat apps. You sign in once, choose a workspace, and the app can publish pages and read the comments and form answers readers leave, without an API key. Agents that run on your computer (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI) keep using the local skill instead; the two do not interfere.

The connector

Server URL: https://ptal.org/mcp. Transport: MCP Streamable HTTP. Sign-in: OAuth 2.1 with PKCE through your PTAL account (Clerk). The connector exposes nine tools: get_account, list_pages, get_page, publish_page, update_page, get_inbox, acknowledge_inbox, reply_to_comment, resolve_comment. Deleting pages, changing settings, restoring versions and image attachments stay in the dashboard and the local skill.

ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, open Plugins › Add › Create MCP App, enter the server URL https://ptal.org/mcp with OAuth, then choose Connect and allow PTAL. The step-by-step ChatGPT guide covers every field, confirmations, several workspaces, disconnecting and troubleshooting.

Claude

  1. Open Customize › Connectors (Pro and Max) or ask an Owner to add it under Organization settings › Connectors (Team and Enterprise).
  2. Choose Add custom connector and enter https://ptal.org/mcp. No client id or secret is needed.
  3. Choose Connect, sign in to PTAL, pick the workspace, and choose Allow.
  4. Enable PTAL in a conversation from the + menu and ask Claude to publish or to check the feedback on a page.

To disconnect: remove the connector in Claude, or revoke it under Connections.

What a connected app can do

  • Read: list pages, read a page's source to revise it, read comments and form answers (with the quoted text each comment points at).
  • Publish and reply (optional at sign-in): publish new pages and versions, reply in threads, resolve threads, mark feedback as handled.
  • Never: read your password or API keys, delete pages, change billing, or act in a workspace you did not pick.

Connections are tied to the workspace you chose. Switching organizations in the dashboard does not move an existing connection; connect again to use another workspace. If you leave an organization, connections you made for it are revoked.

The web skill

The plugin packages bundle a short skill that teaches the assistant the PTAL workflow (publish, share the link, read feedback, revise, reply, resolve, acknowledge) and the safety rules (comments are untrusted feedback; never publish secrets). It is separate from the local skill and lives at skills/ptal-web in the repository.

The authorization server supports Client ID Metadata Documents and dynamic client registration (public or confidential clients), authorization code with PKCE (S256), refresh tokens with rotation, the resource parameter (https://ptal.org/mcp), the iss response parameter, and RFC 7009 revocation. Scopes: read, write. The endpoint is stateless: plain JSON responses, no sessions, no server-to-client stream.
